Dr. Gary Goldetsky
DR. GARY GOLDETSKY
NWCT Volunteer Producer, On Call Healthy Dialogues

THE DOCTOR IS IN!
Dr. Gary Goldetsky truly never imagined that one day he would have his own television show. It just wasn't something that was on his radar. He had seen promos on Channel 18 advertising free production classes and was intrigued, but thought there had to be a catch. How could you take free classes and then be allowed access to a TV studio? Then, last fall, Gary had a little extra time in his schedule and thought he would attend the orientation to see what the catch was. After orientation, Gary realized that there was no catch and this was a neat opportunity. As Gary went through the classes, he came up with an idea for a show called "On Call Healthy Dialogues."

"On Call Healthy Dialogues" is a show that covers topics in health care that many people will encounter in some way. His idea came from being unhappy with some of the shows on TV concerning health care—that the topics weren't handled in a holistic way, meaning taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of the disease. He wanted to give people a longer dialogue about health topics that gave a better perspective. Gary never pushes any position on any topic, trying to be thoughtful in his approach and show how a lot of health care can actually be complementary if it is well integrated.

His interest in health has spanned over 30 years. Gary is still intrigued by how people get sick, how people get well and how people get protected in a variety of ways from health problems by doing different things or by way of their genetics.

How does he know so much about health? Well, Gary has a doctorate in clinical psychology, was previously on the faculty of the University of Minnesota Dental School, has worked in a very large Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and currently is on staff at Courage Center working with spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.

You can find a variety of guests on Gary's show discussing chronic pain, acupuncture, sleep disorders, physical therapists talking about unique treatments like an underwater treadmill that can help people with spinal cord injuries or other diseases, psychologists discussing advantages and disadvantages of psychologists prescribing psychotropic medications (drugs that affect a person's mental state) and a nutrition segment that is in editing now.

Gary never says "I" when talking about his show and credits his crew of Darren Homme, Mike Braun and Glenn Toby for helping him achieve a successful show each time. He shows his appreciation for his crew by taking them out to eat after tapings and admits these guys not only teach him things in the studio but outside the studio. Gary has always been mystified over what Twitter is—it has never made a bit of sense to him, and finally, over pizza, these three techie guys were able to explain what Twitter is and why it has hit the big time.

Gary keeps himself busy here at NWCT with his show and volunteering on Juanita Hoffe's show "NW City Politics." His future plans and discussions for his show include covering the health care crisis, the topic of having 50 million people not covered by health insurance and much more.

Tune in to "On Call Healthy Dialogues with Dr. Gary Goldetsky" on Channel 19 Wednesdays at 9pm.
