NWCT volunteer profile
LARRY HAAPOJA NWCT Volunteer Camera Operator WE'RE STUCK WITH HIM! Larry Haapoja is the man behind the Yankees hat, and he got his start volunteering at NWCT through Dave Goretski who produces the show "Painting with Dave." Larry knew Dave, and since Larry painted himself, Dave invited him along to one of his tapings. Just before the taping, Dave's crew put a headset on Larry so he could be in the studio with the camera operators and be able to hear what was going on in the control room. Larry was really impressed by how everything worked and really enjoyed it. Volunteer Judy Homme was among Dave's crew that day and told Larry that she could see in his eyes that he enjoyed this and encouraged him to come take the classes. Judy became Larry's mentor and taught him the ins and outs of being a camera operator. Larry has done camera work for "Painting with Dave," "The Magic Book Nook," "Yoga on the Go," "In Our Town," and currently works on "Polka Spotlight," "Baby Blue Arts" and "Country Music Jubilee." His ease and smooth pans on the camera make him a great fit for the music shows he works on. It's not hard to notice when working with Larry that he loves the New York Yankees. From his Yankees' hats to his Yankees cell phone holder, it's not hard to give him a hard time about it either, being most of us are Twins fans. Larry says being a Yankees fan in Minnesota is like being a single oar boat in an ocean full of ocean liners. So how does a guy who was born and raised in northern Michigan grow up a Yankees fan? Well, Larry says he loves the Yankees because his dad was a Yankees fan. Another thing Larry enjoys is his 1957 Dodge Panel Truck that he worked on to make it a street rod. He loves older cars, back to the 50s motif, and bringing his street rod to the car shows. Larry hopes to keep volunteering until he just can't do it any more. He enjoys it and the people here so much that he keeps coming back! |
